Blog post: Robert Egger Visit and the V3 Campaign

Last Friday, a small group of YNPN San Diego members had a rare and special opportunity to meet with Robbert Egger, founder of the DC Central Kitchen, Nonprofit Congress, and now the V3 Campaign. The excitement and the inspiration in the room was palpable as Robert shared with us his story of stumbling into the nonprofit sector from being a night club owner. His crisp honesty and humor was incredibly refreshing and I hope that YNPN San Diego members have an additional opportunity to meet with him.

His investment in the next generation (however you may define that) is amazing! A boomer leader who is able to connect the vision of the various generations and move us forward together. In discovering that unity, he also uncovered a common cause that all nonprofits have and created the V3 Campaign. The three V's stand for "Voice" "Vote" and "Value. Take a few minutes to send a message to all the candidates...you are not signing up for anything, but you are taking part in a movement to support the nonprofit sector.

"The V3 Campaign will make the voice of the nonprofit sector heard, its value realized, and its votes counted in every election in America by inauguration day, January 20, 2017. Your work - the issues you care about - will only be addressed when we stand together. We need you to help us ask every candidate for higher office to outline their plans to strengthen the nonprofit sector. The time is now."

The nonprofit sector has a powerful, untapped voice that needs to be heard and considered by politicians. We are under-represented for all the work we do and assets we hold. If you considered the economic impact of the nonprofit sector, we would be the seventh largest country in the world, so why aren't candidates laying out their plans to support our work??? The corporate and government sectors wouldn't stand for it and now we need to STAND UP and take action...THIS IS NOT LOBBYING...it is action to protect our values, our voices, and our vote! To get an up close and personal (not to mention humorous) account of what I mean, watch the V3 video here.

You can find out more about Robert Egger, the DC Central Kitchen, Nonprofit Congress, and V3 Campaign here and on YNPN San Diego's Facebook group and V3's Facebook group. We at YNPN SD have offered to help Robert raise awareness about the V3 Campaign and encourage all YNPN members to sign up for their Facebook Group and participate at the V3 Campaign website.

THANK YOU again to, Robert, for supporting the YNPN community and the nonprofit sector. His innovation is truly an inspiration to us all. BTW...you can also find Robert as one of the YNPN San Diego Friends on Facebook!

Blog post: Thoughts from Board Member Emily Bhatti

I have been involved in the start up of two non profits now, YNPN San Diego being one of them. I noticed some similarities and differences in the process. One of the things that happens with a new npo is no one knows about you and you are trying to get everyone to know you. Suddenly, it seems, so many amazing opportunities come up that you can’t believe all your efforts finally worked. Then comes the reality. Can you commit to all these great opportunities? You feel like you can’t turn anything down because it may be great exposure and raise your profile or make a great connection for the future…the exact thing you have been desperately trying to do.

One great aspect of YNPN SD is it has so many great leaders on board and they have really taken the time to build a structure. So, when these great opportunities come up, there are people to do them and a support system. At the other npo I helped start up, that team of people never really took shape. It always came down to one or two of us to do all the work if some opportunity came up. This is especially exhausting if everyone is a volunteer and everyone also has a day job. After a year or so, the few worker bees got pretty burned out and the organization is left in an awkward situation. Either someone or (preferably) some people need to step up or everyone watches the npo dissolve. Luckily, with this particular npo, people did realize the problem and stepped up. We re-created the structure by giving others more responsibility and autonomy. They felt responsible for their projects and therefore, put a lot more work into them.

It was a great lesson to learn, but I am glad that I didn’t have to experience that same situation with YNPN SD. Currently, YNPN San Diego has many opportunities on the horizon. And while we won’t be able to do EVERYTHING that comes up, I feel pretty confident that we will be able to create meaningful partnerships, great programs and serve our members in a way that will be lasting.

Blog post: Join the Meet and Greet Committee!

As YNPN San Diego has grown, it has become clear that the Program Committee needed to be divided into two committees in order to serve our members' interests and match our organizational capacity: the Meet and Greet Committee and the Professional Development Committee. (Photo on the right...Lenise Andrade, Board Member at Large and Meet and Greet Committee Co-Chair with a furry friend...new YNPN San Diego mascot perhaps?)

Those of you who have submitted an application for the Program Committee and have been serving in that capacity, you will have the option to choose which committee or committees on which you would like to serve - we will have more information for you soon. Thank you to Lenise Andrade and Emily Bhatti, the Meet and Greet Co-Chairs for doing an excellent job! Be sure to watch for our upcoming Meet and Greet with San Diego Rep in early November too!

Please check
out the description for the Meet and Greet Committee below...you can apply to be on any of our committees through the YNPN San Diego website! Look for an upcoming description about the Professional Development Committee soon.

Meet and Greet Committee Description

These events aim to encourage solidarity, give members an opportunity to share experiences and resources, emphasize our value as nonprofit professionals and engage our members in entertaining social events throughout San Diego.

The Meet and Greet Committee works collaboratively with the Membership and Professional Development Committees to bring quality programs to the YNPN San Diego membership. Events occur periodically throughout the year. This committee meets monthly or on an as-needed basis. The Meet & Greet Social Committee is currently looking for members! Those members with event planning, communications and promotions experience are encouraged to apply!

Blog Post: YNPN San Diego Robert Egger Event

Hi YNPN-ers~

Recently, YNPN San Diego found out that Robert Egger is coming to Southern California! Egger is truly one of the innovators and visionaries in the nonprofit sector and he loves YNPN!

One Voice for Change, about Robert Egger…

Robert Egger is the Founder and President of the DC Central Kitchen, where unemployed men and women learn marketable culinary skills while foods donated by restaurants, hotels and caterers are converted into balanced meals. He is also the Co-Convener of the first ever Nonprofit Congress and the founder of the V3 campaign, which is working to get the voice, value and votes of the nonprofit sector recognized in every election in America.

As some of you have seen by now, we have partnered with YNPNla and YNPN Inland Empire for an event with Egger on the evening of October 22nd in LA. While we know it is a haul for many of you, we hope that you might have the opportunity to attend this event as we know it will be fabulous.

We also very lucky to have Egger coming to San Diego. He is a native San Diegan and is speaking as the lunch plenary at SANDAN's annual conference. He has generously agreed to meet with any group of YNPN San Diego members that are available the morning of October 24. Wanting to take Egger up on this opportunity and connect his incredible work to our members, we are quickly working to pull together an event on October 24 at 10:00 a.m.

We understand that the timing may be awkward and unconventional from our regular events and hope that some of you will still be able to join us for this unique opportunity. We will determine a location for the event on October 15 once we have received all of the RSVPs. All members will receive an invitation in the coming week, so be on the look out and RSVP ASAP! The opportunity to meet with Egger will most likely be an informal, one-on-one conversation in an intimate setting like a coffee shop.

Thank you to Egger and his assistant, Erin Littlestar, for helping to make this possible and thank you to all the YNPN San Diego committee members helping with this incredible event! Check back with the YNPN San Diego blog and website for more details...

Blog Post: YNPN San Diego's Story

For years various emerging leaders in the San Diego community have been interested in starting an YNPN chapter in San Diego. In March 20008, Emily Davis relocated here from Denver, CO and immediately looked for the local chapter. She served on the Denver YNPN Board of Directors as the Secretary and loved the experience. Being new to the community, she knew that YNPN could be THE network where should would be able to connect with other young nonprofit professionals both personally and professionally.

After talking with some of her new acquaintances at Emerging Practioners in Philanthropy (E
PIP) and Association of Fundraising Professionals San Diego (AFP) she learned that no chapter existed, but that people were interested in having one. Emily (a.k.a. "Ed" to YNPN-ers) submitted the paperwork to the national YNPN and set up a website - the same website you see at now.

While building the website, she used her experience as a consultant and a board member at Denver YNPN to create job descriptions, committee descriptions, and the beginnings of a vision for YNPN San Diego. Now all she needed were people...

By an incredible twist of fate, Ed learned about Heather Carpenter at the AFP International Conference in March. Heather had coordinated a networking event sponsored by USD and Opportunity Knocks the night after the AFP International Conference finished. At that event, she hoped to find out what the interest would be in launching a local YNPN chapter.

Heather had been involved in the San Francisco Bay Area YNPN and had years of nonprofit experience. Her focus and passion was on leadership within the nonprofit sector and she currently serves as a consultant, blogger, and PhD student! Heather invited Ed to attend the event and the pieces began to fall into place.

Ed arrived at the event with sign up sheets, YNPN San Diego business cards, and half-sheet flyers explaining who YNPN San Diego would be and to get people to participate. That event brought in the first forty YNPN San Diego members.

Board and committee applications came in rapidly as enthusiasm and interest for the local chapter mounted. Soon thereafter, there were 10 board members and multiple committees. As of August 2008, YNPN San Diego had over 250 members, hosted two successful networking events (a total
of 160 attendees at the events), and created an incredible board and committees. YNPN San Diego continues to need your support through volunteering on our many committees. To find out more information, be sure to visit the YNPN San Diego website and watch for upcoming networking and professional development opportunities!

Thank you to the San Diego community and everyone who has been a part of making the YNPN San Diego chapter possible. It is because of your support that we have been able to be successful. Your continued support will be critical in YNPN San Diego's future.
