Dear YNPN member,

The San Diego Foundation is pleased to announce a new resource under development for our communities. BetterGiving is a powerful online tool to inform, empower and enrich charitable giving in the region--benefiting donors, nonprofits and the community at large. The underlying database provides access to information about local nonprofits, including financial, governance and programmatic details.

Powered by GuideStar, and supported by foundation staff, data is assembled into information and, over time, matures into a deep knowledge base of nonprofit organizations, providing essential services for the Greater San Diego region. For more information, please visit http://bettergivingsd.guidestar.org.

Benefits for Nonprofits

· Simplifies application process to local funders and saves nonprofits time in completing applications
· Connects donors with nonprofits
· Creates awareness of your organization with potential donors
· Tells your story at all levels: management, program, and finances
· Advances the nonprofit community in San Diego by strengthening individual organizations and providing a resources to analyze need
· Provides a self-assessment tool to drive internal improvements

To get started: Visit the BetterGiving website at http://bettergivingsd.guidestar.org and click on “Request a portrait for your organization.”

We will email your login and password along with other documents prior to the training. You will need to complete the pre-portrait before the date of your training. Directions on receiving a copy of the pre-portrait are available at http://bettergivingsd.guidestar.org.

*We are excited to work with your organization on this initiative. If you are not the most appropriate person to receive this email, please forward it to that staff member, such as the grant writer or the individual who updates your GuideStar profile.

Join YNPN San Diego for our November workshop, Breaking the Ice: Expanding Your Network as we prepare for the holiday networking season and the New Year. We will discuss, practice and play out techniques for joining existing conversations, getting new ones started and getting what you want or need from every conversation. This will be an active and fun workshop with a diverse group of nonprofit professionals - you’ll be applying and sharpening your networking skills as we practice them! Guest speaker is Linda Spuck from Union Bank and our facilitator is Brian Daugherty from University of San Diego - this is certainly a pair you will NOT want to miss!

Support YNPN San Diego Programs...

All of YNPN San Diego’s programs are free to its members, but there is a cost to coordinate these events, bring high-quality programs to the membership, and serve as a reliable and high-quality organization. Your donations help to ensure that YNPN San Diego can continue to meet these demands. Please consider making a donation online, through our Facebook Cause or at the event. Individuals who donate at the workshop, as well as one week prior and after the event, will be eligible for a gift from our generous in-kind supporters. The recommended donation for this event is $25.

About Sea Rocket Bistro

Sea Rocket Bistro is a farm-to-table restaurant that focuses on local foods in order to provide a more physical connection between their guests and the food they eat. Because much of the food available to us in San Diego is from the ocean, they focus on seafood. One local fisherman calls this "from boat to throat." Whatever you call it, they take the freshest ingredients that are available to us within a day's drive or so.

Thank you to Sea Rocket Bistro and our generous supporters, including Sempra Energy, for making this program possible!

IdeaEncre Network for Nonprofits!

YNPN San Diego is pleased to announce a new partnership with THE knowledge-sharing organization, IdeaEncore Network.

Looking to find and share resources with colleagues?

IdeaEncore Network is an on-line peer-to-peer learning marketplace (like Amazon or eBay) for nonprofits and those who support them to share, sell, and buy all types and forms of practical knowledge, innovative ideas and information assets - - including ready-to-use tools, templates, training content, policies, procedures and plans.

“Working with YNPN San Diego is exciting because we believe knowledge sharing is an opportunity for members to use their technology savvy to make a huge difference to their cause, their organization and their own career,” said Scott Bechtler-Levin, Co-Founder and President of IdeaEncore Network. The company was started here in San Diego and has quickly spread throughout the US and has visitors from over 80 countries.

A few examples of ready to use resources:
Make more impact. Earn more money

IdeaEncore provides an easy way for your organization to share what it knows, learn from others, and earn unrestricted income.

Harnessing the power of Web 2.0 to free knowledge from the hard drives within nonprofits is a quick and easy way to magnify your impact. We encourage you to share knowledge and information as a way to greatly multiply donors’ and funders’ return on investments in the sector. It also is an easy entry point to encourage your board to embrace earned income strategies.

This is an online document sharing community where you and your organization are rewarded for sharing:
  • “Content Providers” (sellers) gain peer feedback / recognition, elevate nonprofit practice, spread their mission, and create earned-income.
  • “Content Consumers” (buyers) save time and money while reducing risk of new initiatives.
The YNPN San Diego Advantage

Share. Learn. Earn. As a part of a countywide knowledge sharing initiative in cooperation with Nonprofit Management Solutions, sharing has never been so rewarding. And IdeaEncore makes it easy to choose licensing from a drop-down list, so your organization’s intellectual property is protected. Share or sell your ready-to-use business planning tools, program policies, fundraising templates, program plans, logic models or other information.
  • No risk: There is no charge to upload and download free materials open to the public. You only pay a percentage of what is actually purchased. Create a free account now.
  • 25% off fees to sell: YNPN San Diego members who upload their first item by 12/31/09 will receive a discount of 25% off IdeaEncore’s Paid Content fees (except minimums) on all of their shared items that are purchased by others through 6/30/10.
  • 10% off fees to sell: All other YNPN San Diego members will receive a 10% discount off of any sales transaction fees incurred.
Choose “YNPN San Diego” as your “primary professional affiliation” in your individual profile to qualify for the above discounts. IdeaEncore will also donate a piece of its fees to YNPN San Diego – so you can support them without costing you anything.

We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to further the mission of your organization while enhancing your career. Please provide suggestions / feedback to Scott Bechtler-Levin, ScottB-L@IdeaEncore.com or 858-204-4672.

A Coincidence!

This week I began a web search for something to blog about by googling "nonprofit leadership". The second site to pop up was Nonprofit Leadership 601, authored by YNPN San Diego co-founder Heather Carpenter. Not knowing Heather's relation to YNPN, I spent a few days skimming over this blog, and I uncovered an exciting post that exhibited enthusiasm and support for leadership among nonprofit professionals. The post shared that the Nonprofit Times had listed the top most powerful and influential people in the nonprofit sector. Rather than renouncing a list that she felt needed some revision and expansion, Heather demonstrated a key leadership act by taking it upon herself to apply the philosophy of "if someone else doesn't do it, then I will." This blogger created her own list of young leaders who have been making waves in the nonprofit sector. I read over this list and found many names of people I am interested in looking up. I also found a name very familiar to me, and, of course, to all of you. Emily Davis, President of EDA Consulting was listed. If you haven't yet had a chance to read about what Emily has accomplished as a young professional, I bid you to read her biography, which you can easily access on YNPN San Diego's website because she is, after all, the founder and Chair. In addition to this wonderful coincidence, I did a little digging to find out more about Heather. It is absolutely no surprise that she was a key player in building the foundation of YNPN San Diego and then played a significant role on the Board during its key growing stages. I'd say that the blog Nonprofit Leadership 601 has been a great find and shows that YNPN SD has some great people who are not only "talking the talk," but also "walking the walk!"

Please share your comments about leaders in the nonprofit world whom you think deserve recognition and who could serve as role models for those of us who are working to develop such remarkable skills. You can add your input by clicking "comments" below this posting.

Nonprofit Leadership Blogs

It is my pleasure to announce that the YNPN San Diego Blog is adding another dimension to the kind of information it delivers. Individual perspectives about current happenings in the nonprofit sector, particularly those concerning leadership, professional development and networking will soon be rushing through the floodgates, or trickling, depending on the response we get from all of you! If you read an article or book, watch a movie or show, or have any ideas related to these nonprofit happenings, send Jessica Rodgers--that's me--an email with your response to it and a link if possible. I will then post it to the YNPN San Diego Blog for everyone in our network, and beyond, to read. Feel free to email me at rodgers.jessica@gmail.com if you have any questions. To kickoff this new addition to what gets written, I have something of my own to share in a forthcoming blog...stick around...

Meet the Advisory Board: Serena Ngo

SerenWhat are your roles within the nonprofit community?

"I am the Training Coordinator for Nonprofit Management Solutions where I am responsible for the planning, marketing and implementation of nearly 300 professional development workshops annually. In addition to being a part of the Advisory Board at YNPN San Diego, I am also a volunteer with Center for Community Solutions as an advocate for victims of sexual assault."

Tell us about an experience you have had with YNPN San Diego.

"All of my experiences with YNPN San Diego have been terrific! My fellow advisory board members are a group of incredible, talented, motivated and dedicated individuals and it has been a privilege to work with all of them as well as the membership and nonprofit community."

Name a person or resource that has helped you in your nonprofit career and why.

"My time at Nonprofit Management Solutions (NMS) has been critical in helping me determine my future career goals. Sara Roscoe Wilson, the Executive Director, has shown me so much encouragement, advice, and support over the years and without her leadership and guidance, decisions regarding my career choices could have taken a lot longer. So thank you Sara and the rest of the amazing staff at NMS!"

Just for fun - what was the last dream you had?

"I dreamt I met up with an old friend from UCLA for drinks - maybe a sign since I'll be returning this fall for grad school."

Serena will leaving the Advisory Board this summer to prepare for her next venture in graduate school at UCLA's MSW program. All of us at YNPN San Diego wish her the best of luck and thank her for amazing dedication!

YNPN Board Member Feedback

Board Member, Megan Lim, shares feedback about YNPN:

I’ve been in the fortunate position to be hiring a position at work right now. Reading over resumes, I’ve been pleasantly surprised at the number of people who list YNPN San Diego on their resume. Particularly impressive are those individuals who are Committee members (automatically indicating a certain level of commitment) and translate their volunteer responsibilities at YNPN into examples they can talk about in an interview regarding projects in which they hold a leadership position or have overcome a challenge.
I know YNPN San Diego Committees are currently recruiting. Check them out on the website. If you do happen to be currently looking for work, substantive volunteer work is a great place to spend some time. You’ll grow your network and develop some new skills you can take to your next interview.

April Meet and Greet Highlights

From Lenise Andrade, Meet and Greet Committee Co-Chair and Advisory Board member...

I often call myself a ‘Recovering Events Girl.’ I started my career in nonprofits mostly doing event planning, starting with small poetry readings to large sit down dinners for 1000 of my organization’s closest friends. But, after moving to San Diego, I thought my event coordination days were behind me. So, it still surprises me how much fun I have being co-chair of YNPN SD’s Meet & Greet committee.

Emily Bhatti and I have a great time planning the events, getting to know the businesses who are kind enough to host us and coordinating our wonderful committee who all pitch in to make these events such a success. It really is a team effort, as one person will make contact with a venue, someone else will create the email invitation, another volunteer will write a press release for the event, while yet another volunteer will track rsvp’s and registration. Everyone does their part to pitch in, and in the end we are able to create a fun atmosphere for our members to meet and socialize.

Coordinating the last Meet & Greet was especially fun, as we were able to look back on the last year of events. And being at Hard Rock Cafe made it perfect, as we were able to go back to the first venue to ever host us. Once again, the Hard Rock Cafe team was a treat to work worth and provided us with a great space, some delightful food and beverages and a fun atmosphere for all. Thank you to our wonderful event partners for the May Meet and Greet!

It was also great to be there with fellow board and committee members. Just thinking back to the last year, as we’ve come to know each other, as colleagues and as friends, and that it was events like this that made it all happen, made it that much sweeter. Growing YNPN SD has been a lot of work and it was great to celebrate the first anniversary with those who make it happen.

We hope everyone has enjoyed the Meet & Greets so far, but welcome any suggestions for upcoming events. We’re looking into ways to highlight members and their organizations and how to connect those in similar organizations. We’re also looking into ways to connect those looking for jobs right now, as we know how hard that can be, especially in this time. If you have any other ideas, please let us know!

And if you’d like to join the Meet & Greet committee, we’re always accepting applications through the website. Having a variety of volunteers from different organizations and parts of town make the team that much stronger. We do a majority of our work via email and usually have committee members handle just one or two tasks per event. We know how busy everyone is and welcome all the help our team can spare.

You can see a link to pictures here or on our website.

And we have already set the date and location for the next event: June 18th at Basic downtown! More details to come, but for now, save the date and hope to see you there!

YNPN San Diego is a Superhero!

YNPN San Diego was recognized this month as Volunteer San Diego's Superhero of the Month. Usually this feature is for individuals, but YNPN San Diego was nominated as a GROUP of leaders in the field. Thanks for the nomination and the recognition! You can nominate someone and support Volunteer San Diego by visiting their website. Below is the article from their recent newsletter.

From Volunteer San Diego...

"This month we would like to recognize Young Nonprofit Professionals Network (YNPN) San Diego Volunteers. YNPN San Diego promotes an efficient, viable, and inclusive nonprofit sector that supports the growth, learning, and development of young professionals. They engage and support future nonprofit and community leaders through professional development, networking and social opportunities designed for young people involved in the nonprofit community.

"YNPN volunteers are all nonprofit professionals who are either employed in or seeking employment in nonprofit organizations. Their volunteers are responsible for managing the "behind-the-scenes" activities of YNPN San Diego as well as their in-person networking and professional development programs. We are also in the middle of a visioning process, fundraising planning process, and communications planning process, as well as creating a board manual, which is a significant amount of work for a small group of amazing volunteers who are delegating and leading other volunteers from the same community."

Have a story about YNPN San Diego to share that highlights their great work? Feel free to leave a comment here or email us at sandiego@ynpn.org.

YNPN Boar Retreat 2009

A couple of months ago I stepped down from the YNPN San Diego board because of my class load. At the time I was relieved to have one less thing on my plate. However recently Emily Davis, YNPN SD's, founder asked me to attend the board retreat since I've been with the organization since its inception.

The retreat was an amazing experience. I enjoyed being in a room full of 18 excited and passionate emerging leaders. I thought to myself during the retreat and I think I even said it out loud--I love this organization!! The retreat was so invigorating. Also, our retreat facilitator said we were really good at communicating with one another and we were good listeners!!

We created our strategy for the year, talked through some tough issues, and tried to be the board we have always wanted to be.

YNPN 09: Being Thankful

From Heather Carpenter at Nonprofit Leadership 601...

The theme of the last session of the YNPN leaders conference was inspiration and gratitude. Chapter leaders from Chicago, NY, Twin Cities, DC, Denver, San Diego, Philadelphia, Kansas City, Cleveland, Austin, San Francisco, Grand Rapids, Indianapolis, Louisville and Phoenix shared their favorite moments of the conference and what they planned to take back to their chapters.

Take Backs:
  • Document more
  • Implement best practices
  • Brand who they are
  • Revise Current Board Structures
  • Add Advocacy voice element
  • Share best practices and data
  • Lengthen leadership pipeline
  • Plan a purposeful path
  • Bring Next generation advocacy issues to the local level
  • Promote voice in the local media
  • Keep momentum going
  • Get Imodules (new website) up and running
  • Refine mission and vision
Also, there was general appreciation in the room for the conference allowing them to:
  • Learn from other chapters about communication and marketing
  • Reconnect with the national board
  • Participate in discussions at the national level
  • Find out what the national board is doing
  • Learn and find out new things
  • Strengthen Chapter
  • Be Inspired
  • Receive Great information
I was also inspired to be a better leader and I was thankful to be in a room with all these amazing emerging leaders.

Here are a few of my peeps who also blogged about the YNPN Leaders Conference.

YNPN 09: Best Practices Every Leader Should Follow

From Heather Carpenter at Nonprofit Leadership 601...

Wow -- let me say that again -- Wow!! I just attended a session led by YNPN DC and I'm impressed. YNPN DC board members shared their best practices they use in their chapter that I think ALL Nonprofits should follow.

They have best practices for EVERYTHING, here's a taster:
  • Procedure manuals for events
  • Shared internal docs
  • Integrated google e-mails
  • An Email schedule (e.g. the 15th of the month they send out the newsletter)
  • Tracking of Email click rates & open rates
  • Program calendar (they set program dates months in advance).
  • Consistent messaging
  • Volunteer contributors to the newsletter that provide enriching stories.
Since I have an operations background I was eating this up, because these best practices make YNPN DC more efficent and effective!!

My all time favorite best practice was they have TALKING POINTS for everything. Since YNPN is a volunteer run organization, this is especially important and helps strengthen YNPN's message in the community.

The board also shared their planning for the future and exploration of a certification in nonprofit management for their members.

YNPN San Diego will definately use some of DC's best practices in the future!! I hope other nonprofits will too.

YNPN 09: Leaders Conference Closing

I sat down to write one of my final blog posts for the YNPN Leaders Conference and then saw how great Heather Carpenter's posts have been and decided to share hers instead....our thoughts and feeling on her last two blog posts are essentially the same anyway. :) Watch for upcoming re-posts from Heather here and on the YNPN San Diego blog. Be sure to check Heather out on her Nonprofit Leadership 601 blog of course.

I will say this...AMAZING! The conference was fantastic. I've never seen a group organize and execute so well on such a small budget and with so many volunteer resources. I am not surprised that it was YNPN San Diego who was able to accomplish this though since they are such a unique group of nonprofit activists.

I loved all the connections I made with some new folks; making face-to-face contact with people I know only through their email personalities; and reconnecting with so many old friends from Denver YNPN. It truly was a gift to be here with this fantastic group.

I'm certainly hoping to be back next year and planning on joining one of the national committees, perhaps the committee executing best practices, and becoming more engaged as time allows. I want to also thank all the folks who participated in the sessions I co/facilitated (social media, strategic alliances, and iModules). I had a great time with all of you and hope you found the information useful. I truly enjoyed serving as a guest blogger and tweeter (not a tweeker) and hope that I can help to serve that role again at other conferences.

Keep in touch and keep the movement strong to inspire, retain, recruit, and develop emerging leaders as a source of a healthy and vibrant nonprofit community!

YNPN 09: Ready for Day 2

I'm just getting the second morning started at the YNPN Leaders Conference with my coffee and oatmeal and am all ready for another exciting day. Day 1 was amazing and was no small feat to organize by the national and DC crowd. If you want to see how to organize a fantastic conference, gather some of the best minds in emerging leaders, and make it all happen with a smile and some fun - you've come to the right place.

Yesterday's speakers were fantastic. YNPN hosted everyone from Diana Aviv (President and CEO of Independent Sector) to Rick Cohen (National Council of Nonprofits) to Alexis Terry (BoardSource) to Frances Kunreuther (Building Movement Project - and one of my personal heros). Richard L Moyers praised YNPN for its amazing work and said that the $5000 the Eugene and Agnes E. Meyer Foundation donated was the best $5000 they ever spent.

YNPN members ARE The future of this sector...we are creative, bold, entrepreneurial and worth every dollar donated and spent on resources like professional development and mentorship.

Day 2 promises to be another fun-filled and action-packed day. I'll be blogging and tweeting (ynpnsandiego) in the morning and then speaking at all three break out sessions this afternoon (yikes!). Here's what you can find this morning and where I'll be in the afternoon...
  • Plenary session for YNPN National - great to see what national has been up to and how it will be planning to help support local chapters.
  • YNPN in the media - very interested to learn more about national's plans and how we can replicate that at the local level.
  • iModules Best Practices Panel (I'm a panelist)- This workshop will review YNPN's progess with iModules from launching the site last summer to where we are today.
  • Using Consensus Organizing to Create a Community Centered Chapter (Heather Carpenter and I will present) - this workshop will discuss the consensus organizing approach one board member and on outside representative took to assist the YNPN San Diego board in creating a community-centered organization that meets the needs and desires of its members.
  • Social Media as an Outreach and Fundraising Tool (I'm the presenter) - Use the power of online networking is the present and future of outreach and communications. Learn specific strategies to design an online outreach plan as well as solicit funds from individual through this session.
Look for me today and congrats to national and DC for a great and successful first day! Thanks to all the bloggers and tweeters too!

YNPN 09: Fundraising in a Tough Economy

Blogging live from the YNPN Leaders Conference. Be sure to follow my tweets too (edaconsulting or ynpnsandiego). Here are some notes and highlights from the session on fundraising in a tough economy. Enjoy!

Fundraising During Economic Uncertainty: Trends and Useful Tools in Philanthropy
Luke Driscoll from CCS Fundraising

Objectives of the discussion
:
  • Fundraising challenges
  • Planning
  • Customized tools
Where are we now?
  • Give advice internally and listen to people's needs and interests
  • Go back and look at what history told us in the past and what has worked to apply to the future.
  • Look in the box to see what you are doing well and where do you need to “tweak.”
Basic Fundraising Stats:
  • 74.8% comes from individuals
  • 5.1% from corporations
  • 12.6% foundations
  • 7.6% bequests
Where do the funds go?
  • 33.4% religious orgs
  • 14.1% education
  • 9.7% human services
  • 9.1% foundations
  • 7.7% unallocated
  • 13.22% international affairs
  • 7.4% public-society benefit
  • 7.6% health
  • Remainder in arts, animals, etc.
Growth of US Philanthropy
  • Philanthropy has never gone down (flat or gone up); this year may be an anomaly.
  • Philanthropy is a function of GNP not the stock market
  • Use philanthropy facts in discussion to help support your recommendations. Use organizations like Giving USA and AFP as resources.
  • Need to do a little amateur psychology to examine why someone would give. The more often we can check some of those “boxes” the better our chances of success
Why people don’t give or stopped giving:
  • No longer felt connected; fundraisers need to continue to connect the donation to the impact; this is very important for donor engagement
  • Only 15% stopped giving because of a lack of finances
Traits of a successful fundraiser:
  • Passion and belief
  • Volunteer leaders
  • Sense or urgency
  • Willing to take risks
  • Strategic thinker
  • See opportunities, when others see problems.
  • Align donor interests with organization’s needs
Planning:
  1. Reaffirm the mission and impact – how does your mission make a difference and why does philanthropy play a key role
  2. Activity - cultivation and engagement (conversations, visits, event, communications, one-on-one briefings and meetings); ask donors for feedback and engagement
  3. Motivate internal leaders: In difficult times, people are still making money; share activity for increasing funding; review fundraising efforts; teach how we can be more effective
  4. Support each other – weekly moves management; seek creative ways to engage and energize staff – how much do you want to raise this week and what does your prospect list look like? Be realistic and set yourself up for success. Challenge each other in order to develop and accomplish goals.
  5. Build the pipeline for long term cultivation – want the donor to understand who the organization is and what they do. Get board members engaged.
  6. Expand your prospect base so your prospects turn into donors
  7. Encourage challenge gifts as a strategy to promote activity; What can you tell people that you are doing well?
  8. Share philanthropic information – similar orgs may have the same donors
  9. Introduce gift options – payment periods; planned and deferred giving opportunities – be flexible
  10. Explore diversification – look at competitors in the category – have balance and areas of growth
Final thoughts:
  • Moves management - Know the number of gifts needed, number of prospects needed, gift range, names, dates
  • Sharing good news and participation; remind people about the impact
  • Cultivation events – bring people closer to the organization
  • Different ways to get gifts – cash to stock to property to planned gifts
  • If there is an elephant in the room (economy) than address it, but don’t highlight it if unnecessary
  • Don’t decide the economic climate for the donor, ask question to understand the person and the audience that you are working with.
