For the first time ever, YNPN San Diego is participating in the San Diego Foundations giveBIG San Diego fundraising drive.  Aimed at supporting San Diego-area nonprofit organizations, this 36-hour event begins December 14, 2011, to match every donation between $25 and $10,000.  This tax-deductible donation makes a great holiday gift, and stretches your dollars further since our events--both for professional development and networking--will directly benefit the next generation of emerging leaders in San Diego.

About giveBIG San Diego

The San Diego Foundation is pleased to announce an innovative way to recognize and support the positive work of local nonprofits in the San Diego community. Beginning December 14th 2011, we will be hosting our first-ever giveBIG San Diego match day initiative. During a 36-hour period, the public will have an opportunity to make online donations to any of nearly 400 nonprofits in San Diego which have a completed BetterGiving portrait, and the Foundation will match organization donation totals in a pro-rated amount. Here’s how the event will work:

• From 7 AM PST, December 14th to 7 PM PST, December 15th, the public will be able to make a donation on our customized giveBIG event webpage to any nonprofit organization which has a published BetterGiving portrait.
• Donors chose their donation amount, with a minimum gift starting at $25.
• The minimum gift is $25. The Foundation will match, on a pro-rated basis, the total of donations made during the 36-hour period. However, only amounts between $25-$10,000 will count towards the match. For any single gift greater than $10,000, only the first $10,000 will be considered for matching funds. In addition, credit card gifts will be eligible for the match pool to the value of actual donations prior to deduction for the fees.

What does pro-rated mean? This means that the percentage in which The Foundation will match donations will depend upon the total match pool amount as well as the total of donations raised during the event. If our match pool is $125,000 and the total of all eligible gifts raised during giveBIG is $500,000, then the pro-rated match will be $.25 on the dollar.
Other markets who have had match days typically average $.15-$.30 on the dollar.

• Each nonprofit should receive one (1) check totaling all donation(s) and match money, minus the 6% credit card transaction and processing fees charged by the bank and processing company, within 21 days of the event’s end.
• Each gift is 100% tax-deductible and irrevocable. All donations will be granted for unrestricted use by the chosen charities.

Donor Spotlight: Kimmi Long by Danielle Reyes-Acosta

Danielle: What attracted you to YNPN San Diego and our last program?

Kimmi: The thing that attracted me to YNPN San Diego is that there is nothing like it in our entire county! What keeps me coming back are opportunities to grow and learn like the workshops and the amazing networking opportunities that YNPN San Diego makes possible.

Danielle: What prompted you to give to YNPN San Diego for the first time?

Kimmi: As soon as I attended an event, I saw the immense value in both experience I would gain and people I would meet through YNPN San Diego and I donated what I could on the spot.

Danielle: How are you involved with the San Diego nonprofit community?

Kimmi: I have worked with a variety of nonprofits throughout San Diego County, many focused on helping homeless youth and then the peripheral groups working to help raise money for the core organizations. I've been a founder and Executive Director (ED) of an nonprofit organization (NPO) here in San Diego, a grant writer, a public relations liaison, a volunteer at over 50 fundraising and program events during the past eight years, as well as worn many other hats to help out whenever I could. The list of NPOs I've helped out with include, but aren't limited to: YNPN San Diego (of course!), Surfrider Foundation San Diego, Stone Brewing annual fundraiser (five years), Ivey Ranch Riding program for kids with autism and other challenges, Second Chance, StandUp for Kids, The Monarch School and San Diego Youth Services.

Danielle: What was the most creative development workshop in which you have ever participated?

Kimmi: Danielle, I'm horrified to admit that I have not yet participated in one of the workshops! I have been to many of the networking events and then with my commitment to Member Relations Committee over the past two years, I haven't yet had time to also do a workshop!

Danielle: How did you initially become involved in YNPN San Diego, and how do you see its programs as playing a role in the development of other young professionals?

Kimmi: I was looking all over for a support system and set of resources as I began the journey as founder and ED (and everything else) for the NPO I was starting eight years ago (The Grom Project.) There was nothing to be found...until several years later I came across Emily Davis who was starting YNPN San Diego. I've been a devout member ever since! The YNPN San Diego programs that exist and ones that are in the making are all about connecting young nonprofit professionals not only with each other, but also with seasoned nonprofit leaders in our community. That is incredible on both counts and really helps the younger generation not only learn and grow, but feel really comfortable with the idea of true collaboration and cooperation. I believe such collaboration on projects, events and even with grant opportunities will truly help build an incredibly strong San Diego nonprofit community.

Donor Spotlight: Laura Rice

1. What attracted you to YNPN and our last professional development workshop?
As a young nonprofit professional, I am always looking to expand my network and learn best practices in the field. YNPN’s mission falls directly in line with my career and goals, so I had to become a member. As one of my potential goals is to become an executive director, I was excited to see the apropos “Stepping Into the Spotlight: Next Gen Executive Director Panel” workshop offered for such a reasonable price.

2. What prompted you to give to YNPN San Diego for the first time?
YNPN is providing great services to our local nonprofit community on a shoestring budget. Having recently returned to work after a period of unemployment, I again have the means to support the organizations I value and want to be sure that YNPN can continue to broaden its reach.

3. How are you involved with the San Diego nonprofit community?
I have been involved with nonprofits in San Diego County for the past 8 years, and currently work for the American Red Cross. I also consult and am a grant writer for local nonprofits. I frequent AFP San Diego meetings and conferences that are applicable to my career and goals, and attend executive development events as an alumna of the Point Loma Nazarene University MBA program.

4. What was the most creative development workshop in which you have ever participated?
From a personal development perspective, my favorite workshop was a team building retreat I attended years ago during the beginning of my career. Being led through exercises such as the plane crash in the desert helped me to better understand my own strengths and perspectives as I learned how a team’s skills and abilities can either perform together or can oppose the work to be done.

5. How did you initially become involved in YNPN San Diego, and how do you see its programs as playing a role in the development of other young professionals?
Emily Davis shared about her work with YNPN at an AFP event last year, and I was intrigued by the organization from the start. I signed up quickly thereafter and was enthused by the creative discussion YNPN led at the workshop I attended. Creating venues for the next generation of leaders to discuss best practices and problem solve is a great way to forge personal development while enhancing the nonprofit sector.
