YNPNSD Welcomes the Community Council

On January 27th, YNPN San Diego launched its very first Community Council comprised of 12 seasoned nonprofit professional leaders that will help guide YNPN’s development and growth. These seasoned leaders will lend experience and guidance to the Advisory Board and YNPN members, connect YNPN San Diego with community resources and advocate for the needs and interests of young professionals in the sector.

We had a great group in attendance at the first meeting last month held at The San Diego Foundation, despite the horrible rainy weather. As a group, we reviewed YNPN San Diego’s organizational history, vision and priorities and discussed Council expectations and objectives.

One of the Community Council’s first priorities will be the development and implementation of a new YNPNSD Mentorship Program, one of the priorities outlined by the YNPN San Diego membership. Council members will offer guidance, best practices and firsthand knowledge about what makes a successful mentorship program and how we can best serve the YNPN member community with rewarding mentorship.

Why do you give to YNPN San Diego? Why would you encourage others to do the same?

YNPN San Diego serves a vital role in the San Diego nonprofit community that not only serves emerging leaders but the community as a whole. YNPN San Diego connects young professionals, future leaders and organizations to share ideas, resources and provide development opportunities. This develops a more organized, better trained, entrepreneurial sector that would be better position to serve the communities needs in the coming years.

Reoccurring donations allow continued support for the organization and provides an income stream that can be relied upon. The monthly contribution minimally impacts my personal finances, though allows me to give more annually than I would be able to give in a single contribution.
What has been your favorite YNPN San Diego program?

The Next Gen ED Panel was a great Professional Development session. Listening to local leaders discussing their experiences and techniques for planning their careers, coping with setbacks, and still succeeding to become the leaders they are was inspiring. This session underscored the importance of building a true network of people in your life to support, advise, motivate, and challenge you to be all you can – and be the best leader you can.
How are you involved with the San Diego nonprofit community?

Previously I served on the YNPN San Diego advisory board and remain a strong supporter and passionate about the mission. I recently left Lux Art Institute where I served as the Deputy Director and accepted the position as Finance Director with Volunteer San Diego.

What role do you see emerging leaders (35 and younger) playing in the future of the San Diego nonprofit community?

Emerging leaders in the San Diego nonprofit community bring so much to the sector. By challenging the current standards, to implementing an entrepreneurial mindset, and bringing large amounts of energy, but most important – tons of passion – emerging leaders will continue to advance the nonprofit community’s impact and improve the quality of life in San Diego. As future leaders in the community, fine tuning skills, building networks, sharing information, sharing resources, will create a more organized, better managed, and better run sector, allowing more people to be served and progress to be made towards more causes. If we can find ways to work more closely together, it will be these leaders that make even greater impact within the community.

The San Diego Chapter of the American Marketing Association will host the 12th Annual Cause Conference on Wednesday, March 10th at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice at the University of San Diego. Speakers and workshops will focus on the latest marketing and fundraising information to help nonprofits reach new heights despite the recession. • Leadership skills – particularly in nonprofit management and governance, membership services, and organizational growth.

Basic Duties
Board members are expected to attend all monthly Board meetings. In order to understand the ongoing work of the organization, Board members are also required to serve on at least one committee of the YNPN San Diego Advisory Board. Incoming board members will commit to serving from April 2010-March 2011.

Board members receive no financial compensation for their service, and must:

• Demonstrate an enthusiastic commitment to YNPN San Diego and all that it represents, motivation to grow and learn with the organization, and potential for future leadership.
• Participate in monthly Board meetings (approximately 2 hours).
• Commit to participating in at least one committee and consider chairing a committee.
• Participate in group decision-making and policy-setting discussions.
• Subscribe to the highest ethical standards.

Rocking the New Year--Nonprofit Governance Symposium

It's not too late to register!

Leadership doesn't wait long to start the year off right! On January 8 and 9, many leaders, both new and experienced, will be joining together at USD for the 6th Annual Nonprofit Governance Symposium where the 4th Kaleidescope Award for Exceptional Governance will be presented.

The atmosphere of the event seems invigorating and innovative--we would expect nothing less from such great leaders! The Symposium uses language from the ever-popular foodie world to describe the seminars being offered. No creative young mind could pass on ordering an opportunity to attend "Gourmet Cooking on a Budget" for fundraising conversation or "Picking the right Utensils" for the low-down on designing the best government model and its lifecycle!

To top it off with a juicy cherry, The San Diego Foundation has been amazingly supportive of YNPN San Diego and other nonprofits and has offered 10 scholarships to the event to support organizations that are members of BetterGiving, "a resource to help you find, learn and give to San Diego nonprofits. Because of the San Diego Foundation, you will see some Board Members (including myself) from YNPN and members of a number of other San Diego nonprofits in attendance.
