36^th Annual National Philanthropy Day

Volunteer! An opportunity to participate in a large special event and meet 800 of San Diego’s civic leaders, philanthropists, volunteers, and nonprofit professionals.

When: Wednesday, November 12, 2008

Volunteers please arrive by 10:30 a.m.

Event begins at 11:30 and ends at 1:30pm

Where: Sheraton Harbor Island – East Tower in the Grande Ballroom

Responsibilities:

• Greet and direct attendees
• Registration table nametags
• Usher attendees to tables
  

• At 10:30 a.m., we will briefly walk through the event space
• Guests begin arriving at 11 a.m.
• You are free to leave at 11:45 a.m. after the program begins or you are welcome and encouraged to stay and observe this fantastic event
• Planning Committee and all volunteers may enjoy the National Philanthropy Day lunch in a private space following the event (please RSVP for lunch head count)

Blog post: Robert Egger Visit and the V3 Campaign

Last Friday, a small group of YNPN San Diego members had a rare and special opportunity to meet with Robbert Egger, founder of the DC Central Kitchen, Nonprofit Congress, and now the V3 Campaign. The excitement and the inspiration in the room was palpable as Robert shared with us his story of stumbling into the nonprofit sector from being a night club owner. His crisp honesty and humor was incredibly refreshing and I hope that YNPN San Diego members have an additional opportunity to meet with him.

His investment in the next generation (however you may define that) is amazing! A boomer leader who is able to connect the vision of the various generations and move us forward together. In discovering that unity, he also uncovered a common cause that all nonprofits have and created the V3 Campaign. The three V's stand for "Voice" "Vote" and "Value. Take a few minutes to send a message to all the candidates...you are not signing up for anything, but you are taking part in a movement to support the nonprofit sector.

"The V3 Campaign will make the voice of the nonprofit sector heard, its value realized, and its votes counted in every election in America by inauguration day, January 20, 2017. Your work - the issues you care about - will only be addressed when we stand together. We need you to help us ask every candidate for higher office to outline their plans to strengthen the nonprofit sector. The time is now."

The nonprofit sector has a powerful, untapped voice that needs to be heard and considered by politicians. We are under-represented for all the work we do and assets we hold. If you considered the economic impact of the nonprofit sector, we would be the seventh largest country in the world, so why aren't candidates laying out their plans to support our work??? The corporate and government sectors wouldn't stand for it and now we need to STAND UP and take action...THIS IS NOT LOBBYING...it is action to protect our values, our voices, and our vote! Blog post: Thoughts from Board Member Emily Bhatti

I have been involved in the start up of two non profits now, YNPN San Diego being one of them. I noticed some similarities and differences in the process. One of the things that happens with a new npo is no one knows about you and you are trying to get everyone to know you. Suddenly, it seems, so many amazing opportunities come up that you can’t believe all your efforts finally worked. Then comes the reality. Can you commit to all these great opportunities? You feel like you can’t turn anything down because it may be great exposure and raise your profile or make a great connection for the future…the exact thing you have been desperately trying to do.

One great aspect of YNPN SD is it has so many great leaders on board and they have really taken the time to build a structure. So, when these great opportunities come up, there are people to do them and a support system. At the other npo I helped start up, that team of people never really took shape. It always came down to one or two of us to do all the work if some opportunity came up. This is especially exhausting if everyone is a volunteer and everyone also has a day job. After a year or so, the few worker bees got pretty burned out and the organization is left in an awkward situation. Either someone or (preferably) some people need to step up or everyone watches the npo dissolve. Luckily, with this particular npo, people did realize the problem and stepped up. We re-created the structure by giving others more responsibility and autonomy. They felt responsible for their projects and therefore, put a lot more work into them.

It was a great lesson to learn, but I am glad that I didn’t have to experience that same situation with YNPN SD. Currently, YNPN San Diego has many opportunities on the horizon. And while we won’t be able to do EVERYTHING that comes up, I feel pretty confident that we will be able to create meaningful partnerships, great programs and serve our members in a way that will be lasting.

Blog Post: November 6 Meet and Greet

YNPN San Diego has an exciting and thought provoking evening planned for you! Join us on Thursday, November 6th as we partner with the San Diego Repertory Theatre for an evening of theatre, music and mingling!

This Meet & Greet month's includes a free pre-show happy hour for mingling, with live music by Nisha.We will be seeing Water and Power, Richard Montoya's penetrating look at Southern California's power politics, embodied by the personal and political conflicts between two high-level brothers in Los Angeles. Tickets will be only $25 (normally $34), with $5 of each ticket sold going to support YNPN's member programs. Use code "YNPN" for your ticket discount. After the show, all attendees are invited to a post-show mingle at nearby club THIN.

As YNPN San Diego has grown, it has become clear that the Program Committee needed to be divided into two committees in order to serve our members' interests and match our organizational capacity: the Meet and Greet Committee and the Professional Development Committee. (Photo on the right...Lenise Andrade, Board Member at Large and Meet and Greet Committee Co-Chair with a furry friend...new YNPN San Diego mascot perhaps?)

Those of you who have submitted an application for the Program Committee and have been serving in that capacity, you will have the option to choose which committee or committees on which you would like to serve - we will have more information for you soon. Thank you to Lenise Andrade and Emily Bhatti, the Meet and Greet Co-Chairs for doing an excellent job! Be sure to watch for our upcoming Meet and Greet with San Diego Rep in early November too!

Meet and Greet Committee Description

The Meet & Greet Committee provides quality social and professional networking opportunities for YNPN San Diego members. These events aim to encourage solidarity, give members an opportunity to share experiences and resources, emphasize our value as nonprofit professionals and engage our members in entertaining social events throughout San Diego.

The Meet and Greet Committee works collaboratively with the Membership and Professional Development Committees to bring quality programs to the YNPN San Diego membership. Events occur periodically throughout the year. This committee meets monthly or on an as-needed basis. The Meet & Greet Social Committee is currently looking for members! Those members with event planning, communications and promotions experience are encouraged to apply!
